👗 How to Measure for Clothing
Use a flexible measuring tape. Measure over light clothing or bare skin. Keep the tape parallel to the floor for horizontal measurements.
1. Bust / Chest

- Measure around the fullest part of your chest/bust.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight.
- Relax your arms at your sides.
2. Waist

- Find your natural waist (narrowest part of torso).
- Usually 1-2 inches above your belly button.
- Don't suck in your stomach!
3. Hips

- Stand with feet together.
- Measure around the fullest part of your hips/seat.
- Ensure the tape is level all the way around.
4. Sleeve Length

- Bend your arm slightly at the elbow.
- Measure from the center back of your neck, over the shoulder, and down to the wrist.

Clothing Size Guide: International Shirt Grades
⚠️ The "Vanity Gap" (Old Navy vs H&M)
Two brands can label a shirt "Medium", but they will fit completely differently. This is called the Vanity Gap.
- 🇺?? Relaxed Fit (Old Navy, Gap): A "Medium" is effectively a Large (40-42" Chest).
- 🇪?? Slim/Euro Fit (H&M, Zara): A "Medium" is true-to-size or small (38-40" Chest).
Rule of Thumb: If buying "Euro" brands, size up. If buying "American Comfort" brands, size down for a fitted look.
Alpha Measurements Cheat Sheet
| Label | Standard Chest | International (approx) |
|---|---|---|
| Small (S) | 35-37" | EU 46 (FR 36) |
| Medium (M) | 38-40" | EU 48-50 (FR 38-40) |
| Large (L) | 41-43" | EU 52-54 |
| XL | 44-46" | EU 56 |
The "Japan Drop" Rule
Shopping for Asian brands (Uniqlo Japan, Superdry)? Use the "One Size Up" rule. A US "Medium" is almost always a Japanese "Large" or even "XL" depending on the cut. Japanese measurement grading assumes a slighter frame with narrower shoulders.
Converting Women's Dress & Pants Sizes
Women's clothing sizing is even less standardized than men's, because it mixes two different traditions: a numeric label (US 0-16, UK 4-20, EU 32-48) and an alpha label (XS-XXL) that don't always line up the same way from brand to brand. The single biggest source of confusion is vanity sizing — many mainstream retailers have gradually relabeled the same measurements with smaller numbers over the decades, so a "size 8" from one brand and a "size 8" from another can differ by two or three inches at the waist. Because of this, the numeric label alone is the least reliable thing to convert — the underlying body measurement (bust, waist, hip in inches or cm) is far more consistent across regions than the size label is.
Dresses vs. Separates
Dress sizing typically follows the same numeric scale as women's tops, but cut for a fitted waist rather than a relaxed torso, so a dress in your usual top size can fit tighter through the midsection than a blouse in the same label. For pants and skirts, always prioritize the waist and hip measurements over the label — a UK 12 in a straight-cut trouser and a UK 12 in a stretch legging are built to completely different finished measurements even though the label is identical.
